News Archive 18th November 2009 :: Green Light for Watford Business Network Travel Plan
The first step is to appoint a Watford Business Network Travel Plan Coordinator and a suitable candidate has already been identified who will work with local companies to encourage the use of sustainable transport modes such as walking, cycling, the use of public transport and car sharing as feasible and realistic alternatives to single occupancy car use for every day commuting.
We will also be introducing a bicycle loan scheme which will mean that employees of selected local companies in the town centre will have access to a bicycle free of charge for their employees to make local journeys and to and from their place of work. There will initially be 50 robust bicycles available in year 1 increasing to 100 in year 2 and a number of local companies including Clydesdale Bank and the Harlequin have already expressed an interest in becoming involved. The bicycles will be branded in One Watford colours and in addition to free helmets, lights and locks we are also able to offer one free training course per bicycle.
Cycling and walking are of course good for your health, for your pocket especially in the current economic climate and of course the environment so for more information or if your company would like to become involved please contact Roger Gagan at the Watford Chamber of Commerce on 01923 442442 or email info@watfordchamber.co.uk
If the bicycle loan scheme is the success that we hope it will be then our long term aim is to roll out a bicycle loan scheme available at a modest cost to all residents / businesses in Watford within two years and we will certainly be watching progress with the recently announced London scheme with great interest
