On July 22 Mayor Dorothy Thornhill launched Watford Commuter which is a scheme being run by the Chamber to encourage Watford businesses to adopt more environmentally sustainable travel practices. At the launch free bicycles were presented to the first two members of the scheme Chamber Members Clydesdale Bank and the Community Housing Trust.

In the September Newsletter we mentioned the work that was taking place to develop a sustainable transport strategy to help to reduce congestion in our town. Well the really good news is that the scheme has now been signed off by the Local Strategic Partnership One Watford and as soon as the initial funding has been received which we anticipate will be early in the new year then things will start to move.

Whilst most of the comment in our newspapers and on the news is still about the effects of the recession and the UK's record six quarters of negative growth the world faces an even greater challenge unless something is done about it, and fast. I am referring, of course, to global warming where recent reports show that the world is facing an average 4 degree C temperature rise by 2060- barely 50 years away - well within the lifetime of our children and grandchildren.
